Walk like a Woman : The Loafer

In our modern society, Loafers are a timeless style for men and women. Many shoes like loafers, brogues and Chelsea boots were traditionally worn by men, but are now classic staples in most women’s wardrobes. Shoes and their design are a great sign of the times throughout history. There was a time when women wearing loafers was taboo and frowned upon. Women were objects of delicate beauty and not seen as serious when it came the workplace, politics or even intellectual conversation.

In the 1900’s, we see the changes in women’s footwear choices as they asserted themselves and began the long journey to reach gender equality.

During the 1920’s, we see the first signs of women’s fashion shifting to a more masculine, androgynous look. Coco Chanel’s masculine fashion influence revolutionized the way women dressed. Suddenly suits, shirts with collars, short hairstyles, practical and comfortable shoes and loafers were trending as a symbol of Women’s Liberation. This look empowered women, freeing them from restrictive corsets and unbearably uncomfortable heels.

In the 1950’s, penny loafers became a hit among women. Named for the practice of inserting a penny into the strap on the apron of the loafer. In those days, you needed a penny to use a public toilet, hence the history of the phrase “ I need to spend a penny”.

Loafers took a backseat in the 1970’s Disco era but, in the 1980’s there was a resurgence of loafer demand amongst the preppy, yuppie crowds. Brands like Gucci and Prada introduced luxurious, high-end loafers that appealed to women looking for comfort and style.

Today, loafers are a wardrobe staple for all women across the globe. They are sophisticated and symbolise liberation and power. They are versatile all year round and will always be relevant which is why they are a focus in our Froggie collection.
