Court Shoes

Court Shoes

Some people refer to courts as pumps with heels, but the correct term is a Court shoe. The name “court shoe” originates back to the Royal Courts of Europe in the 16th to 18th Centuries. During this time, high-ranking women at court wore elegant, fashionable shoes designed to impress. They were made of luxurious materials like silk, velvet, satin and intricate embellishments like buckles and other ornaments. Over time, the term “court shoe” became synonymous with a specific style shoe that was characterised by its sleek closed toe, lower cut upper and a heel higher than an inch.

Throughout the 20th Century, courts have evolved to suit lifestyle. The rise of feminism and women’s liberation in the early 20th Century lead to more practical and comfortable. Heels dropped and a more masculine design became popular.
The Flapper era (1920s to 1930s) saw a resurgence of high heels with decorative designs.
During World War II (1940s to 1950s), women’s shoes became more utilitarian again, focusing on practicality whereas the post war era returned to glamour again with stiletto heels and luxurious materials.
The women’s liberation movement (1960’s to 1970’s) led to a shift towards more comfortable, practical shoes. Court shoes lowered their heels and became more minimalist in design.
The rise of the corporate world for women (1980s to 1990s) led to a demand for a polished professional court shoe with high heels to stand tall and powerful.
The modern era from 2000 to now has seen a diverse range of court shoe styles, from glitzy stilettos to conservative low block heels. We have designed a collection that has something for everyone.
